VAR, the Video Assistant Referee system, will be introduced in the Premier League next season, but Cardiff City could have badly used it during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Chelsea.
The Welsh club is mired in a relegation scrap, but looked to be on its way to picking up an important victory over the Blues. But then Cezar Azpilicueta headed home an equalizer while in an offside position in the 84th minute after Marcos Alonso had flicked on Willian’s corner. That wasn’t the worst of it, though, as Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored on a header in stoppage time to lift Chelsea to the come-from-behind win.
Had VAR already been in place, Azpilicueta’s goal would have been reviewed and more than likely would have been called off. But it was allowed to stand, paving the way for what could prove to be a decimating loss for Cardiff. Neal Warnock’s side is 18th in the table, five points from safety with seven matches remaining on the schedule, so they desperately needed to take something from Sunday’s contest to keep alive their hopes of survival. Now, it looks like they’ll be going down, and while the Blue Birds’ poor play is the main reason for it, Sunday’s gaffe by the referee could ultimately play a big role in their demotion.
