A much-needed home win over Manchester United has vaulted Arsenal back into the race for a top four position. JohnMolinaro looks at that and more in his PremierLeague weekend review.

Fresh off a midweek loss in the Europa League, Arsenal bounced back in a big way on Sunday, recording a much-needed home win over Manchester United. The victory allowed the Gunners to leapfrog the Red Devils into fourth place, and move to within a point of third-place Tottenham.

There is still a lot of work to be done with Arsenal by manager Unai Emery if they are going to seriously contend for the Premier League title next season. Progress has been made under the Spaniard this term, though. The Arsenal of last season never would have won this game, especially after getting it all wrong against Rennes in the Europa League.

Revived and refreshed since Emery took over from Arsene Wenger, the Gunners quickly put an embarrassing performance in France behind them to outplay Manchester United on Sunday, and handed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first Premier League loss since taking over from Jose Mourinho. The Spanish manager didn’t play it safe. Instead, Emery deployed an offensive-minded lineup with Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in attack, and was rewarded for his efforts as the hosts put United under pressure from the opening kickoff and never let up. Arsenal has now collected 12 points in their 10 Premier League games against fellow “big six” opponents in 2018-19. That’s double the amount they won in such games last season.
