A preferred indictment filed against former Kentville youth tennis instructor Aaron Byron Cumberland in Nova Scotia Supreme Court contains 19 charges, including internet luring and child pornography offences. - File/Ian FaircloughThe Crown has filed a preferred indictment against former Kentville youth tennis instructor Aaron Byron Cumberland, sending him straight to trial in Nova Scotia Supreme Court on 19 Halifax charges, including internet luring and child pornography offences.
A Supreme Court jury in Kentville found Cumberland guilty in October 2020 of internet luring, invitation to sexual touching and making sexually explicit material available to a minor. The charges all involved a former tennis student. Cumberland was sentenced in December 2020 to 18 months in jail, deemed served by his time on remand, and two years’ probation. The probation order included bans on using the internet to access social media sites or chat rooms and on having contact with anyone under the age of 16.
Prosecutor Peter Dostal explained to The Chronicle Herald on Wednesday that he is not proceeding on the original four charges of breaching probation because the allegations are covered in the three probation charges on the indictment.
