Garcia: GOP fight for county commissioner nod could get intense

New interim Precinct 3 Bexar County Commissioner Marialyn Barnard is sworn into office Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022 at the Bexar County Courthouse. Barnard was sworn in to take the place of Commissioner Trish DeBerry, background, who vacated the position when she announced she was running for Bexar County judge. That’s how a San Antonio Republican privately described the looming GOP nomination battle for the Precinct 3 county commissioner seat.

That means whoever gets the Republican nomination is practically assured of winning in November and will probably be able to hold on to that seat for as long as they choose.Last December, Trish DeBerry relinquished the office, less than a year into her first term, in order to run for county judge. Because the nomination process won’t require him to file campaign paperwork with the county as a Precinct 3 candidate, Perry could present his case to the precinct chairs without having to give up his City Council seat.Sources say Carlton Soules, who once held the District 10 council seat now occupied by Perry, is making a strong push for county commissioner by lining up support from precinct chairs.

Former Councilman Greg Brockhouse gave consideration to the Precinct 3 seat a few months ago, but won’t be competing for the nomination, at least in part because he’s concentrating on helping to get DeBerry elected county judge.Marialyn Barnard was appointed in January by County Judge Nelson Wolff to fill the Precinct 3 seat on an interim basis.
