Foreigners often see the United States as highly dysfunctional and divided.

Political debates are notoriously fierce on college campuses, where young people like myself are exploring new ideas, carving out identities, and learning to articulate our values. This is a large part of how intellectually stimulating and fulfilling college life can be, but vociferous debate can also be alienating and reflective of how US political polarization divides us and undermines our ability to listen to each other.

The media is full of stories about campus politics: shouted-down speakers, incidents of hate speech, and debates over cultural appropriation. Other reports focus on the echo chamber I described. But fewer columns and stories focus on solutions to this issue, or how students can sensitize themselves to others’ perspectives, encourage and even seek out different opinions from their own, and articulate their own ideas while remaining open to evolution.

My experience studying polarization with a diverse group of students taught me three things about the topic. Second, my research itself made a profound impact on my view of polarization. While one might assume, as was my initial hypothesis, that the tendentious philosophies of news channels such as MSNBC and Fox News are largely responsible for American political polarization, in reality, most Americans are politically disengaged.
