In a rare moment of high drama in what is normally the orderly operation of the National Assembly, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Joël Arseneau and Pascal Bérubé made good on their promise to try and enter the blue room without swearing the oath.As the Canadian national soccer teams head to their respective FIFA World Cups, Derek Van Diest is on the scene to cover all the action.
Despite the setback, St-Pierre Plamondon insisted the PQ is making progress on the matter, noting the other parties in the house now want to reform the system to make the oath optional. That was not so clear a few weeks ago. Roy in her ruling, however, said abolishing the oath — a Constitutional obligation — requires an actual law.
“Me, the premier, I don’t like taking an oath to the King,” Legault said. “We all agree about the need to abolish this oath. Now, our legal counsel tell us to avoid challenges to the laws we are going to adopt in the coming weeks, we need a bill to abolish the oath to the king. St-Pierre Plamondon said he remains hopeful one of the bills can be adopted before the house recesses for Christmas and is counting on pressure from the population to move things along.Article content
