The Winnipeg Jets take the top spot as the highest-ranked Canadian team in our latest Power Rankings, fueled by a six-game winning streak and impressive offensive numbers. The Edmonton Oilers drop two spots, while the Ottawa Senators continue to exceed expectations. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames also receive attention in this week's rankings.
The Winnipeg Jets have surged to the top of our Power Rankings, reclaiming their position as the highest-ranked Canadian team. Riding a six-game winning streak, the Jets sit second in the NHL in points percentage and third on our list. Their recent offensive explosion, racking up 28 goals during their current win streak, has propelled them to the forefront. The Jets boast the league's highest-ranked offense and possess the best power play, converting at a sizzling 33.
3 percent – nearly five percentage points better than any other team. Defensively, they stand tall, ranking first in goals against and placing in the top three for both slot and inner slot shots against. The Jets are a force to be reckoned with and are poised to challenge for the top spot on our list soon. The Edmonton Oilers have slipped two spots from second to fourth. Despite a 1-1-1 week, the Oilers maintain some of the best underlying numbers in the league. No team has a better expected goals differential than Edmonton, so a return to the top three in the coming weeks wouldn't be surprising. The Ottawa Senators remain at 11th on our list. For several weeks, we've ranked the Sens higher than their standings position, and we're starting to see their strong process-related stats translate into results. Ottawa now sits 13th in points percentage while ranking ninth in expected goals percentage. While some criticized our model's ranking of the Senators in recent weeks, they appear to be in the right spot as Ottawa is currently third in the Atlantic Division, hot on the heels of Toronto for second place. The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a few spots after a recent three-game losing streak, but they bounced back with a thrilling victory against the Oilers on Saturday night. The Leafs' lower ranking compared to their standings position stems from their average underlying numbers and recent performance. Toronto holds an 8-6-0 record in the New Year and sits 17th in expected goal differential for the season. The Calgary Flames, following a 2-2-0 week, occupy the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the next closest competitor. Meanwhile, Connor Wolf continues to make a compelling case for Rookie of the Year honors. Wolf ranks seventh in the NHL in save percentage – .917 – and has played a key role in helping his team earn a point in 69 percent of the games he's appeared in. The only goalie with as many games played and a better points percentage is.The Vancouver Canucks climbed five spots this week, moving from 27th to 22nd. The Canucks have undergone a significant transformation following a pair of major trades, bringing in players like and Drew O'Connor. It remains to be seen if their revamped roster can maintain competitiveness in the playoff race in the West. The Montreal Canadiens, on the other hand, plummeted from 26th to 30th. After a dominant five-week stretch where they posted the best record in the NHL, the Habs have now lost five consecutive games and are six points out of a playoff spot in the East. Scoring has been a major issue during their recent slump, with the Canadiens averaging just 1.6 goals per game during their losing streak. They have an opportunity to turn things around on Tuesday night in San Jose against the last-place Sharks
