Some power outages might continue into Sunday morning

It may take a couple of days for power to be restored to all parts of Vancouver Island, following a wild storm that at its peak left 80,000 people without power on the Island.

Olynyk said it’s difficult to say how the one-night event ranks in terms of the damage done, but he said it is right up there. By midday Saturday, power was back for about 230,000 customers around the south coast of the province; at its peak there were 330,000 customers without power in B.C.Olynyk said there will be some parts of Nanaimo, the southern Island and the west coast where it will take crews a while to restore power.

“The extreme weather events of the heat dome and the droughts we’ve been having put incredible stress on the trees — this isn’t the climate that they’re used to,” said Olynyk. “So it makes it a lot easier for trees to fail. Branches that are dead are a lot easier for them to go flying when the winds pick up.”
