Don Michael Vickers of Sydney Mines will be competing in the 2023 Memory League World Championship starting Tuesday morning. The tournament kicked off Sunday and will run virtually until Jan. 29. CONTRIBUTEDSYDNEY MINES — There are champions when it comes to physical sports. And there are champions like Don Michael Vickers who are competing in a whole other level of sport — for the best memory recall.
Among his notable victories: a third-place finish in the 2021 Russia Memory League Open Championship in the pro division and second place among Canadians in a 2021 Honorary Memory Challenge. He has also become a top-20 ranked player on Memory League competition platform’s world rankings. “When the pandemic first hit and we were all isolated, I was just sitting alone memorizing cards and numbers. Then I started recalling words and that became my favourite discipline. In a couple of weeks, I was capable of memorizing between high 30s and low 40s — in terms of a number of words — in around a minute.
Vickers also began posting his efforts via YouTube as well as social media outlets Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, where he also shares various tips for achieving greater memory recall via cards, English and international words, images and more. Vickers also established a connection with longstanding British memory champion Katie Kermode, a four-time memory world record holder who’s been active in memory sports for decades.
