Marie-Philip Poulin led the Montreal Victoire to a 2-1 victory over the New York Sirens in the final PWHL game before the league's break for international competition.
Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice and Ann-Renée Desbiens made 23 saves on 24 shots as the Montreal Victoire defeated the New York Sirens 2-1 on Sunday in the final PWHL game before the league's second break for international play. The victory extended the Victoire's winning streak to five games. Poulin's goals were her ninth and 10th of the season, maintaining her league lead. Desbiens earned her league-leading eighth win and her fifth consecutive victory. She had seven wins last season.
Montreal improved to 8-3-1-2 with 31 points, leading the PWHL standings by six points over second-place Minnesota. The game remained scoreless after one period before Poulin quickly put Montreal in front with a backhand goal just 34 seconds into the second period. She added her second goal four minutes later on a breakaway, capitalizing on a pass from Abby Boreen. While enjoying a power play after New York's Jade Downie-Landry was penalized, Poulin was given a five-minute major penalty for charging after a hit on Downie-Landry. Despite the lengthy power play opportunity, Desbiens stood tall, thwarting the Sirens' efforts. New York finally broke through with 6:07 remaining in the game, as Allyson Simpson scored her first PWHL goal. The Sirens continued to press, but they couldn't capitalize on a power-play opportunity in the final four minutes or a player advantage after pulling goalie Kayle Osborne for an extra attacker in the final 2:30.
