Poth went 4-1 in Division III, which contains teams in 3A Division II and smaller classifications, bracket play to reach the championship game

Poth receiver Bryce Burke catches a pass for a touchdown against Tidehaven in the second round of the Division III bracket at the Texas 7-on-7 State Championships on Friday at Veterans Park in College Station.COLLEGE STATION — A grueling running game powered Poth to the Class 3A Division II football state championship game last season, but it was the Pirates flexing their muscles in the passing game in a banner day Friday at the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships at Veterans Park.

Poth bounced back with wins over Harmony , Tidehaven , Sunray and Daingerfield in its first four games of bracket play, setting up a rematch with Miles in the championship game. The Pirates’ comeback fell short in a 22-20 loss to the Bulldogs, who repeated as Division III champions.“We bounced back today like we usually do,” Poth head coach Jeff Luna said. “These kids are resilient, and they woke up today ready to play football.

Miles grabbed control after that as the Bulldogs drove for a tying touchdown and two-point conversion on the ensuing possession. On Poth’s next drive, a Miles defender stepped in front of a pass and returned it for a touchdown to make it 15-8.
