The oilpatch was barely able to rejoice this Victoria Day weekend as Western Texas Intermediate reached US$30 per barrel for the first time since March, before Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden poured cold water over the festivities by noting he would kill the Keystone XL pipeline if elected.

“The denial of science ends on Day 1 of a Biden presidency,” a spokesperson for the former vice-president said in a statement to the media. “Biden strongly opposed the Keystone pipeline in the last administration, stood alongside President Obama and Secretary Kerry to reject it in 2015, and will proudly stand in the Roosevelt Room again as president and stop it for good by rescinding the Keystone XL pipeline permit.

The minister noted that the absence of Canadian crude would leave the U.S. to rely on heavy crude oil from places such as Venezuela “and will continue to be a victim of the same price wars and instability we recently witnessed from Russia and Saudi Arabia.”
