House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sought to downplay a potential criminal case related to a hush-money payment by former president Donald Trump, saying it involved “personal money” and shouldn’t be prosecuted under the statute of limitations. His comments came at a retreat in Orlando, where House Republicans have been peppered with questions about a potential indictment of Trump, which could come in New York as early as this week.
