San Francisco Animal Care and Control recently responded to a report of a sick-looking fox in the Presidio.A possible outbreak of canine distemper is affecting wild animals in the Bay Area, according toSan Francisco Animal Care and Control recently received a report of a lethargic gray fox in the Presidio that some people were approaching and petting. While the animal was gone by the time Animal Care and Control officers arrived in the Presidio, the incident sparked concern.

“In those photos, it doesn’t look normal,” Presidio Trust ecologist Jonathan Young told Bay Nature. “I think something’s going on, primarily in the raccoon populations, but it’s spilling over potentially into this fox if not other foxes.” San Francisco Animal Care and Control also told Bay Nature that it has been seeing a spike in reports of sick raccoons and skunks this year. While Animal Care and Control hasn’t tested the wild animals it's seen for canine distemper, San Rafael rescue group WildCare has — and it's noticed an outbreak of the virus over the past two years. Skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes and a river otter were among the 30 animals to test positive.
