The former Churchill volleyball coach is part of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2023 after winning two state titles.
Wanda Bingham built a powerhouse high school volleyball program during her 22 seasons at Churchill. In 1992, she watched Andrea Williams, flanked by her mother Nancy Williams and father Henry Williams, sign a letter of intent with Texas A&M.Wanda Bingham’s positive approach endeared her to her players at Churchill and helped make her one of Texas' greatest high school volleyball coaches.
"You knew every time you faced Churchill you were up for a very, very tough game and that you had to be at your best," said Lupe Ruiz, who retired in 2005 as the area's winningest coach with 635 victories after 36 seasons at McCollum and Lee, a stint that included leading McCollum to the Class 4A state title in 1975.From 1973 through 1994, Bingham motivated her players with a gentle but firm hand while feeding them constant encouragement.
“We would talk about the next team we would face and our strengths,” Bingham said of her end-of-practice ritual. “I never talked about our weaknesses – never. I was constantly building up their confidence, and we beat teams we never should have beaten because the kids had confidence.” Bingham said she inherited her bright outlook from her father. Allen Kent Bingham, who died in 1991 at 67 of dysautonomia, a rare disease that impairs the autonomic nervous system, was a World War II veteran who worked as a truck driver delivering diesel to farmers.Bingham’s early years made her an unlikely candidate to become a Hall of Fame volleyball coach. Growing up in Uvalde, she played basketball and was a cheerleader at Uvalde High before the Coyotes had a full-fledged volleyball program.
