The Why Portugal concert series features 10 Portuguese artists performing at Toronto's Lighthouse ArtSpace, showcasing the diversity and evolution of Portuguese music. From traditional instrumentals to modern electronic fusions, the festival aims to connect with the Portuguese diaspora and introduce Canadian audiences to the unique sounds of Portugal.

A Portuguese music festival is kicking off in Toronto on Friday, with performers bringing with them the sounds of tradition and experimentation. The Why Portugal concert series is bringing 10 Portuguese artists to Toronto 's Lighthouse ArtSpace venue on Feb. 14, 17, 22, 25 and 26. Performers will be flying in from the country to visit Ontario's diaspora community, which according to 2021 census figures, is upwards of 300,000.

The festival aims to connect with Portuguese Canadians while also introducing the diverse sounds of Portugal to a wider audience. Joao Diogo Leitao, a musician deeply invested in the traditional Portuguese guitar viola braguesa, found his passion for the instrument during a hitchhiking trip across Europe. He was struck by the diverse range of traditional instruments found in the small country, each region boasting its own unique acoustic guitar. Leitao's melodies remain rooted in tradition, while other artists like Vasco Ribeiro Casais take a more experimental approach. Casais blends electronic tunes with unique instruments and the voices of elderly Portuguese individuals, recording them during his travels across Portugal. He hopes to bring a sense of connection and nostalgia to the Portuguese diaspora in Toronto, reminding them of their roots and fostering a sense of unity. The festival also features Bicho Carpinteiro, a band composed of Rui Rodrigues and Diogo Esparteiro. They create a unique 'augmented traditional' style of music by combining classic Portuguese instruments with modern beats and production techniques. The band believes in respecting tradition while pushing creative boundaries, adding a contemporary twist to ancient sounds. Other artists like Joana Alegre draw inspiration from their family histories and personal experiences. Alegre's lyrics reflect the rich tapestry of her childhood, filled with her father's poetry readings and her uncle's mesmerizing performances on the Portuguese guitar. The Why Portugal concert series is a celebration of Portuguese musical heritage, showcasing the evolution of traditional sounds and the innovative spirit of contemporary artists
