Beachgoers are being warned to be careful after a sighting of the jellyfish-like Portuguese man o' war on a Donegal beach
Dr Griffin told BBC News NI the creature in the photograph was almost certainly a man o' war.
“You can see the gas filled bladder, the colours are right, the tentacles, the way they drape down, are right," he said. “They can be quite exciting to see because they are that little bit more unusual, little bit more exotic."“In the water their tentacles can be hard to see so swimmers should keep a good distance," he said.
"And even when washed up on the beach, when they are dead or dying, their sting cells can still trigger”.
