The Port of Long Beach had its best January on record in 2022.
The cargo surge that has repeatedly broken import records since the middle of 2020 continued last month, when the Port of Los Angeles saw a 3.6% increase compared to January 2021.
Seroka, in his monthly virtual briefing, provided the latest Port of LA data from January, declaring that the port was “off to a strong start in 2022.” Since the summer of 2020 — after cargo took a precipitous plunge in the first five months of the pandemic — consumers, who couldn’t go to movies or sporting events or restaurants, began using their disposable incomes on projects such as home improvement and gardening.
Loaded and empty containers, for example, are now moving more quickly to free up dock space, Seroka said — allowing ships to be unloaded more quickly.
