Following an 18-month campaign largely driven by students, Portland Public Schools are cutting ties with local police
that began at CPS’s district office. In addition to calling for the cancellation of CPS’s contract with CPD, GKMC’s list of demands included hiring specialized therapists, boosting funds for arts-based extracurriculars, mandatory courses on the history of race in America taught by Black educators, an end to suspensions and expulsions, and the establishment of a community garden.
Kobayashi is a graduate of Whitney M. Young, and said proximity between the school and the police academy was a source of tension. “It’s not a good vibe to be next to a police station when you’re 15, 16 years old, trying to be a teenager, and now you’re worried about being arrested every day,” he toldKamil said she sees this as the start of a revolution, one that is coming on the cusp of sustained action for years by organizers.
“It’s already been working and breaking through for a lot of other cities because everything is so continuous,” she told. “It’s not just known organizers who are working, it’s people who haven’t come to a protest in their entire lives, and they turned up last night. We’re going to continue to protest and march and do these rallies until change actually happens, especially because people have been working for a minute to get CPD out of CPS. Now it’s even more applied pressure, times 10.
“We talk a lot between ourselves and within our organizations that we as a people come from enslavement, worlds where liberation was utterly unspeakable and impossible, and now we are at a point in leverage, and at a point and position to put our people wherever we want to go,” Kobayashi said. “It’s about organizing for us, and...when we become organized as a movement...
