Wegovy, approved by Health Canada in 2021 as a once-weekly medication for chronic weight management, aims to support people living with obesity. During STEP clinical trial, patients taking the drug lost an average of 15 per cent of their body weight over 68 weeks, with 83.5 per cent achieving at least a 5 per cent weight reduction compared to 31.1 per cent in the placebo group.Participants also experienced improvements in physical function and other health indicators like waist circumference and cardiometabolic parameters.
Wegovy is available for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher , or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health issue like high blood pressure or diabetes. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and headache.
