Scripps says it remains in negotiations with plans, insists that no decisions have been made
Two sought-after physician groups affiliated with Scripps Health appear to be in fierce negotiations that have led them to file termination notices with Medicare Advantage plans that are used by thousands of San Diego County patients who could end up changing doctors or paying more in monthly premiums.
However, original Medicare comes with a major caveat: The benefit covers only 80 percent of a person’s medical bills. Given how expensive a single hospital stay can be, 20 percent of the bill is a potentially bankrupting amount of risk. Craig Gussin, a well-known San Diego health insurance broker, said many brokers around town are aware of the current situation between Scripps and Medicare Advantage.
If termination notices were not rescinded, then these folks would need to find different doctors still offered by their existing Medicare Advantage plans or switch to original Medicare and sign up for medigap insurance, incurring additional premiums.by patients, according to health care report cards by the California Office of the Patient Advocate.
