Garcia: Most amazing thing about Popovich’s NBA career — all his wins were with the same team
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich directs his squad againt the Houston Rockets at the AT&T Center on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022. The most remarkable thing about his illustrious coaching career may be that all his victories were with the same team. After four years with the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach under Larry Brown, he could have followed Brown to a new gig with the Los Angeles Clippers.More for youThe Indiana Pacers were also inquiring about Popovich’s availability.
Popovich had an intense love for the game and a voracious appetite to learn more about its nuances. Any chance to gain fresh insights from one of the giants of the game was something he couldn’t pass up. Two years after departing for the Bay Area, Popovich would return to South Texas to run the Spurs’ front office. Two years after that, he canned head coach Bob Hill and installed himself as Hill’s replacement, a move that was much derided at the time but that seems to have turned out reasonably well.
As a player at Merrillville High School in Indiana and later at the Air Force Academy, he didn’t make varsity until his junior year. “Becoming a pro coach wasn’t something I ever thought of,” Popovich said after hiring on as a Spurs assistant. “It was right out of the blue.”
