The pope also said that the global financial system was destroying 'Mother Earth'
Pope Francis has called capitalism"intolerable" and said the global financial system is destroying the environment after being presented with a communist crucifix by the Bolivian president.
The comments came on the same day that Francis was controversially presented with a 'communist crucifix' by Bolivian president Evo Morales. The gift, which depicts Jesus crucified on a hammer and sickle-shaped cross, was accepted reluctantly by the pope, who appeared confused and surprised when it was presented.
The pope has been outspoken in his criticism of capitalism throughout his two-year papacy. Most notably, in an 84-page letter titled Evangelii Gaudium , he described the Western financial system as an"economy of exclusion and inequality" and called for ethical reform of the system., which the pope has categorically denied.
