The poll of 1,166 registered voters, conducted by Quinnipiac University between May 28 and June 1, found Trump leading Biden by just 1 point in the Lone Star State, 44% to 43%.in early May, which had Trump leading by 6 points.
Texas is a historically Republican state, having voted Republican in every election since 1976, but it has been getting tighter; Trump won it by just 9 points in 2016 after Romney won it by 16 points in 2012. Both candidates are unpopular in the state, with Trump’s approval rating 5 points underwater and Biden’s favorability rate 7 points underwater.
Republican Senator John Cornyn, who faces a reelection battle in 2020, has an approval rating of just 37% compared to a 36% disapproval rate.Democrats have long hoped to win back Texas, which they now believe is more vulnerable than ever thanks to an influx of Hispanic voters and the shift of suburban voters towards Democrats.With 38 electoral votes, a win in Texas could help Democrats offset losses elsewhere on the map like Wisconsin or Michigan.
