A meme posted on Instagram baselessly alleges that Paul Pelosi had not been seen in public recently because he had monkeypox. Pelosi was attacked by an intruder he did not know in his home in October and suffered a fractured skull and other injuries.

His first public appearance sparked another. This one appears to play off the baseless conspiracy that he and his attacker had a sexual relationship.read,"Paul Pelosi is seen in public for the first time, since he was ‘attacked’ in his home, at the Kennedy Center Honors. #PelosiPox." Next to it is a photo of Pelosi at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C. A close-up image inset in the photo supposedly shows Pelosi’s chin peppered with mpox lesions.

The Instagram post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. in November after the World Health Organization deemed the name racist and stigmatizing. The virus, which is similar but less deadly than smallpox, is endemic to Africa, but cases had spread to Europe and the U.S. this past summer.
