The island of Martha’s Vineyard is not itself a city. It’s made up of six small towns, three of which voted to adopt sanctuary area policies in 2017. Migrants stayed at a shelter in one of the towns for two nights.
GOP leaders pushed back with a repeated claim — that the island had already declared itself a sanctuary destination.
