Tory MPs fear this is getting 'far too nasty'; has Truss withdrawn job offer to Sunak?; Labour voters are clear on who won debate Politics live updates 👇

We reported this morning that Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak will face off again tonight on Talk TV.

Sir Keir Starmer has declined to say whether a Labour government would give public sector workers the inflation-matching pay rises they want. Sir Keir also said he changed his mind on nationalisation because of ballooning post-pandemic debt, indicating that a Labour government would fix"broken" water and energy markets through regulation first.

This year, a number of measures were unveiled by the government to help people pay their bills amid rising energy costs. However, with the latest estimate showing that October's rise will see the price cap reach £3,244, MPs have said more help is needed.

In her latest live update, Tamara reports that"a lot" of Tory MPs are starting to worry that the contest between Sunak and Truss is getting"far too nasty":Public spending in the North falls behind rest of England despite government's levelling-up agenda That means per-person public spending in the North went from being £246 higher than the England average in 2019, to £86 under the average in 2021.

Speaking to Sky's Kay Burley, Mr Clarke said"there were important issues at stake" yesterday and that would in turn"lead to robust debate". "There is a good deal on the table, one where there is further discussion to be had and yet we can't," he added. He described the debate as"astonishing" and said the country saw the two contenders"trash" the last 12 years of the government but offer"no real opportunity for change".

"The problem with it, or problems, is simply it will enhance the size of the Lords. So there's a numbers aspect. "We were unanimous in this view that the House was already too large, that the numbers should be reduced and steps should be taken to reduce our numbers," he added.
