Politicos question why Liberals are holding their fire against Poilievre, by abbas_rana1 cdnpoli (unlocked)

The Justin Trudeau Liberals should start to define Pierre Poilievre, centre, the prohibitive front-runner in the leadership election, now, before he has a chance to define himself, say top political strategists. From:Should Pierre Poilievre win the Conservative leadership race next month as expected, political insiders say he won’t make an easy opponent for the Liberals.

It’s standard practice for incumbent governments to try to define a newly elected leader of the opposition in a negative light right after their election. Martin did that with Stephen Harper, and when Harper became prime minister, he tried to define three Liberal leaders: Stéphane Dion, Michael Ignatieff and Trudeau.

However, Herle said the Liberals could go after Poilievre for his support of the Freedom Convoy, and his meetings with controversial right-wing extremist figures likeHerle said Poilievre may claim he did not know about Mackenzie’s background, but now that he knows, he should publicly distance himself from Mackenzie, or the Liberals will most likely be use that connection against Poilievre in the next election.

Liberal MPs and former senior Liberals interviewed for this article said that dealing with Poilievre will be “uncharted” territory, considering his combative leadership style and the fact that he hasn’t made himself a target for social conservative hot-button issues like abortion and gun control. Coteau said that winning any election is a challenge, whether it’s the first or the fourth election for a government. To do that, he said, political parties have to come up with a set of ideas that attract Canadians. Coteau said he was confident the Liberals would be able to do it in the next election.
