Scammers are imitating police officers in the Gatineau area, Gatineau police warned on Thursday.

The scam begins over the phone and is a variation on another recent fraud scheme involving fake financial advisors, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau said in a media release.

A man who also identified himself as a police officer joined the conversation and explained that the woman could get her money back. All she had to do was provide all her bank cards and PIN numbers to the police.Article content “A police officer will never ask a fraud victim to hand over their cards and personal identification numbers. Instead, they will advise the victim to contact their banking institution to have the cards cancelled,” Gatineau police said.
