The missing gator is up to 4 feet long and is 'capable of inflicting serious or fatal injuries,' police said.

A local police officer shot at the alligator Saturday night after officers spotted the reptile in the Ambrose Brook in Middlesex Borough, following a prior sighting that evening in Lake Creighton, according to anThe alligator, estimated to be 3 to 4 feet in length, “immediately submerged into the brook and it was unconfirmed if the attempt was successful,” the Middlesex Borough Police Department said on Facebook.

“Citizens are strongly urged to stay away from Creighton Lake and the Ambrose Brook and should not approach or make attempts to capture the alligator. They should contact the Middlesex Borough Police Department at 732-356-1900 if the reptile is observed in the area,” Geist said. “Possession of alligators or crocodiles is against the law in New Jersey,” said Larry Hajna, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP’s Fish & Wildlife devision is seeking information about the reptile’s location “so that a humane trap can be set,” Hajna said.
