Police say victims lost hundreds, even thousands, of dollars to a buy-and-sell scheme.
Waterloo Regional Police have released the photo of a person they want to speak to as part of an investigation into buy-and-sell thefts in Kitchener.
They said several incidents were reported between May 13 and Sept. 4. The victims told police they had advertised items for sale through an online platform. They were then contacted by an interested buyer who agreed to meet up in person.
“During the interactions, the victims did not receive payment for the items and, in some instances, the suspect gained access to the victims’ banking applications and made unauthorized transactions,” a media release said. “The resulting financial losses ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars. ” Waterloo Regional Police did not specify what kind of items had been listed for sale.
They advised both sellers and buyers to meet up in a well-lit public place, such as the Buy and Sell Exchange Zones at local police detachments: 45 Columbia Street East in Waterloo, 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge or 176 Hespeler Road in Cambridge. Anyone who has information that can help with the investigation is asked to call 519-570-9777, extension 2227.

Edmonton police issue Canada-wide warrants for missing dad, childrenEdmonton police have issued Canada-wide warrants for the arrest of Scot MacDermid, a 42-year-old man who has been unreachable with his two young children since the end of August. MacDermid and his children, nine-year-old Lesley and six-year-old George, were first reported missing on Aug. 28. Police asked for the public's help locating them on Sept. 8 and later learned the three were last seen with an unknown man in Lloydminster the same day they disappeared. That unknown man has since been found and investigators have spoken with him. Canada-wide warrants were issued for MacDermid on Sept. 23 in relation to two counts of abduction in contravention of a custody order. Investigators say they won't issue an Amber Alert based on what they know so far. "An Amber Alert is one tool available to police, but it is not the investigation itself. Finding Lesley and George remains our top priority," Staff Sgt. Robert Davis, with Edmonton's child protection unit, said in a news release. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of MacDermid, George or Lesley is asked to call Edmonton police at 780-423-4567.
