Police investigate more hate files, but say no presence of organized groups yyc
Data provided by police show 385 files were reviewed for potential hate or bias motivation in 2021, up from 240 files in 2020 and 160 in 2019. Of last year’s files, 114 were found to be hate or bias-motivated crimes, down from 121 in 2020 but up from 73 in 2019. Meanwhile, the number of hate-motivated incidents that were non-criminal nearly doubled last year, growing to 81, up from 43 in 2020 and 42 in 2019.
Const. Matt Messenger with the CPS hate crime unit said this year’s numbers are on par with last year. He said he typically sees more discrimination targeting racialized groups over other types of hate. “There’s no specific group I would say that is victimized more than others,” said Messenger. “In terms of racial ethnicity, versus say, homophobic or toward sexual orientation kind of thing, I think definitely more racist incidents.”following the beginning of the conflict between the two countries, and officers have responded to protests around COVID-19 and public health measures due to the use of racist symbols, such as swastikas.
