Police said no charges were filed and the driver was not impaired.

Officers were initially dispatched to a report of a man “wandering” in the road near Route 37 east and Marian Street around 5:45 a.m., according to township police. Minutes later, police received another call about a person hit by a car in the area.

Responders found Joseph L. Witty Jr. dead at the scene in the shoulder of Route 37 east and the vehicle that struck him stopped at a nearby car dealership parking lot, police said in a news release. The investigation found that Witty was nearly struck at first while walking south across the road, according to police. He crossed over the median and was hit by a vehicle traveling east in the right lane, authorities said.

He was not in a crosswalk or walking in the shoulder, police said. There was no evidence the driver was using a cell phone or impaired.Thank you for relying on us to provide the local news you can trust. Please consider supporting
