Just before 5 p.m. on April 8, Kelowna police attempted a traffic stop but the driver allegedly ran off. Officers were able to arrest the suspect a few blocks away following a brief foot chase.
The suspect was known to carry firearms and there were indications the suspect may have thrown away a gun during the pursuit. Police service dog Jango was then brought in to help and successfully located a loaded 9-millimetre handgun nearby. The gun was found in the backyard of a family property where kids resided and near a busy shopping mall.
“The highly trained police service dog Jango was instrumental in removing a gun from the streets of Kelowna and potentially keeping an innocent child from finding it,” said Const. Mike Della-Paolera. The suspect, a 39-year-old Kelowna man, is due in court on May 5 and will face six counts relating to the arrest, including possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession, and obstructing a police officer.
