Group walking through community for men's healing surrounded by police Tuesday after First Nation leadership learned one of the participants was apparently involved in a four-day 'freedom movement' occupation of Dan Pine Healing Lodge last year
A ceremonial walk for men’s healing came to an abrupt end in Garden River First Nation territory on Tuesday after it was broken up by police over a participant's apparent ties to last winter's occupation of the Dan Pine Healing Lodge.
Jones said the group informed Anishinabek Police Service that it was conducting a ceremony and continued walking after police initially attempted to stop the group. At the time, Garden River described the group occupying the community healing lodge as part of the ‘freedom movement.’ Rickard said leadership contacted police Tuesday to make sure “we weren’t going to revisit what we experienced last year.”“We’ve always supported , but we’ve always had that basic respect and protocol that people normally go through to ensure that it’s alright with the community,” said Rickard. “I understood that didn’t happen.
