The IIO BC says police actions did not contribute to the death of a Parksville man after he was held in holding cells in 2023.

John Boyce had been arrested by police for causing a public disturbance and died in hospital after leaving police custody.

Prior to this, he was seen at the street market, appearing to be in distress, asking someone to call police saying he had been assaulted the night before. He had a black eye and blood on his nose and hands. Shortly after, police were called to a gas station for a man causing a disturbance. An officer who responded was told that he had kicked over the equipment of the band at the market and that he had been punched and kicked by “other homeless people.”“A civilian witness heard the arresting officer, before he closed the door of the police vehicle, ask the AP, ‘Are you okay? Do you need anything?'” theBoyce was taken into the holding cells at 8 p.m.
