The Pokémon reboot's new protagonist is already setting herself apart from Ash, proving that this series is going to be very different from before.
The new Pokémon anime, Pokémon Horizons, has debuted in Japan, and fans' first look at the new protagonist is making it clear that new heroine Liko is no Ash Ketchum--and that's a good thing.
The Pokémon Horizons season premiere gave Liko, the Pokémon reboot's new hero, her first proper introduction, and in stark contrast to Ash's boisterous enthusiasm, Liko is shown to be very reserved and nervous. Liko does face some similar challenges to Ash, despite the school setting.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Liko & Sprigatito Echo Ash and Pikachu's Pokémon Troubles Liko isn't at school long before she's given the chance to choose her first Pokémon. There are still a few choices when she walks up, and she chooses carefully, yet still is surprised to end up with Sprigatito. It's quite a coincidence, since starters from all regions were present, yet Liko managed to pick one from her homeland of Paldea.
While it remains to be seen how Liko and Sprigatito's dynamic will eventually be, the two have the seeds of an interesting relationship planted. Pokémon Horizons is off to a great start, and hopefully, Liko's stark differences from Ash will help to set the series apart and pave a new way forward for the anime.
