Pokémon Detective Pikachu offers some pleasures for the uninitiated, but they are few and far between via nparts
One concern when attending a movie based on a popular media franchise is that it will feel like watching someone trying to play the game. But Pokémon Detective Pikachu actually feels more like watching someone trying to make the movie.
Now, if you’re asking what Pokémon are, you’ve wandered into the wrong movie and should probably back out slowly and go see Endgame again – it needs you if it’s ever going to pass Avatar at the box office. Basically, they’re adorable creatures that can turn into nasty little fighters without warning. Ever owned a cat?
Tim heads to the city to wrap up his father’s affairs but runs into Pikachu, who is suffering from amnesia but eager to help figure out what happened to the old man – with no body left at the crash scene, there’s a possibility he’s still alive. Their quest soon intersects with police lieutenant Yoshida , cub reporter Lucy Stevens and Pokémon city founder Howard Clifford , all of whom clearly know more than they’re letting on.
The film is clearly designed to appeal to fans – I took two kids with me and they declared themselves amused, even Charmandered. I was less so, smacking my head at all the bizarre reversals of fortune and layers of deception in what starts out as a fairly decent hint-of-noir gumshoe tale.
