But while Poilievre’s career as an elected official came after he moved east, the seeds of his political identity were planted at the University of Calgary, where he studied international relations in the late ’90s.
His classmate, Lanny Westersund, said that during that time, Poilievre’s ideology was shaped by the professors in the political science department such as Ted Morton, Rainer Knopff and Tom Flanagan — all members of the so-called “Calgary School,” a group of conservative-leaning academics often credited with being influential to the politics of the Reform party in its fledgling years.
“It’s great to see that somebody from Calgary and from the political club’s office has been able to achieve such a lofty position in federal politics,” said Westersund.
