Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced that a Conservative government would implement mandatory life sentences for individuals convicted of trafficking, producing, or distributing over 40 mg of fentanyl. The party also proposes 15-year prison terms for those caught with between 20 mg and 40 mg. This announcement comes amidst U.S. President Donald Trump's concerns about fentanyl flowing into the United States from Canada, though Poilievre stated the policy would not be dictated by U.S. demands. Poilievre also reiterated his commitment to providing treatment for addiction and defunding programs that provide prescribed narcotics.
