“Our goal is typically for the fledge rate to be 1.65, so we are above our target for this year,” McLaine told SaltWire on Sept. 19, adding she was happy to see a higher success rate for fledglings, with an average of 1.7. “With the piping plovers being a coastal bird, and the dunes being a coastal habitat, populations can change year to year.”

This past 2023 breeding season, Parks Canada was able to monitor 10 pairs of plovers, who successfully fledged 17 chicks. As an endangered species, Parks Canada has set conservation goals for the piping plover population, including increasing the number of breeding pairs to 15. - Parks Canada/Special to SaltWire
