PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Is TPC Sawgrass a wonderful stage or a watery swamp? Via jonmccarthysun
That said, nobody is looking for the spiritual home of golf this week at the Players Championship. TPC Sawgrass was designed by Dye four decades ago to thoroughly test the world’s best golfers while creating a stadium atmosphere similar to other popular sports. You can disagree with the premise upon which the course was built, but it’s hard to argue the goal wasn’t met.
Testing every aspect of a golfer’s game is where TPC Sawgrass stands out. If you ask five pros what the key to playing well this week is, you’re very likely to get five different answers. One of the often-repeated claims about the course is that it doesn’t favour any single type of player, which the results over the years certainly support.Article content
Following a very American style of golf, there aren’t very many options for golfers around TPC Sawgrass. The game is played in the air, over and around water, rather than on the ground. It is a grueling test of consistency to put the ball in the right spot all day, followed by two demanding closing holes that force your hand. Being something of a see-shot, hit-shot golf course, it’s no surprise it suits the eye of Canadian ball-striking savant Corey Conners.
While it may be a course that dictates your decisions, the strategy at TPC Sawgrass has changed in recent years with players taking bigger gambles off the tee rather than playing for position. Some of this is the tournament’s move from a firmer and faster May, to a softer and more receptive March, and some of it is just a sign of the times.Article content
