In mid-May, Environment Canada set out tougher air quality standards in the Sarnia, Ont., area in a move targeted at Ineos Styrolution
The owners of a Sarnia , Ont., plastics plant that has been emitting dangerous levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene for years say they need more time to comply with tougher federal rules.
In a statement sent to media on Saturday, Ineos said the company has made “significant investments to comply with increasingly stringent emissions limits” and said its site will stay closed until it can meet the new targets. “While we understand urgency, we are clear: safety, not speed, must be the primary consideration,” Ineos representative Brian Lucas said in the statement. The statement does not indicate how much more time the company is asking for, but does say it has agreed to delay the start of the work until after a community event at Aamjiwnaang on June 22 and 23.
