Plant-based food has become a summer sensation with high profile startups making their way onto the menus at global fast food chains.

Renner says that while it appears to be a fad the sector will continue to grow as plant-based meat offerings become more refined and less processed. While plant-based meat has its champions others in the food industry have concerns about the health implications of the industrial alchemy needed to turn pea protein into a 'oozing' burger.
“Pick any natural product and you can make an argument that it is processed. But it is the responsibility of the brand and the food producer to be open and honest about what they do.”Some 9 billion chickens were slaughtered in the U.S. in 2017 alongside 32 million cattle and 121 million hogs, according to the North American Meat Institute. That’s a huge amount of catching up to do for the vegan meat industry, and a challenge that Renner does not think is surmountable at this stage.
