The city has 1.5 million square feet of office space currently under construction.
“We are still seeing strong leasing activity in Plano which is driving the demand. The highest demand is for the new, highly amenitized buildings in Legacy or Granite Park. But we also have two major office buildings being updated and modernized , so reinvestment is also occurring in our existing office stock because Plano is an attractive address for companies,” said Doug McDonald, Plano’s director of economic development.
These numbers, based on one year of data on workers 16 years or older, may not be as accurate as data collected over a longer period of time, McDonald said. He also noted that more people come to Plano to work than leave Plano to go to work. The pandemic shifted employees’ expectations of the workplace, McDonald said.
Plano’s business centers, like Granite Park, prove attractive for employees who can go shopping during their lunch break, grab coffee at the nearby cafe or stroll down a boardwalk.Yet, not all of Plano’s building stock meet the needs of the modern worker. That’s why the city is working to modernize older office spaces and construct new ones with these goals in mind.
“Companies that are wanting to relocate here to Plano, they want move-in ready space,” McDonald said. “They want to touch it, feel it. They want to know that tomorrow they can start moving to this building.”Plano Mayor John Muns and the city’s Economic Development department often tout Plano’s business-friendly environment.
