Singer-songwriter Sean Jones knows a thing or two about creating a romantic atmosphere.
From his days in the JUNO Award-winning ’90s R&B group In Essence to his successful solo career, Jones has built a discography packed with love songs – and enough “baby-makers” to have earned him the title ofof the genre. “I don’t feel like I’m the reigning king of that,” he says with a laugh. “But this last record that I put out, ‘Weekend Lover,’ definitely has some baby-makers on there for sure.
With his smooth voice and warm demeanour, it’s easy to see why Jones is a sought-after wedding singer for many of Toronto’s high-profile couples. Some of the best weddings he’s been a part of are, he says, “the small ones, where there’s just so much love in the room that it doesn’t matter what’s happening, and everyone’s just having a good time talking, eating and enjoying the music.”
It’s that sort of experience Jones is channelling with “The Love. Affair.” That’s the title of his show on Feb. 10, part of the, one of Toronto’s largest Black Futures Month celebrations. Following his “Holiday Soul” concert, which brought 800 of his fans to Koerner Hall in December, Jones is looking forward to playing the 200-seat theatre at Harbourfront Centre. “It’s going to be this amazing, intimate experience,” he says.
Under the musical direction of Darryn de Souza, Jones will be accompanied by his 10-piece band, the Righteous Echo. “I don’t know how many artists wish that they could perform with a 10-piece band maybe once, maybe twice,” Jones says. “I do it all the time. I am really blessed to have that opportunity. And the material that we get to do because of that is just incredible.”
