A Santa Clara County-commissioned government history book project that cost taxpayers over $1 million and contained large portions of copied material from sources like Wikipedia has been spiked.
, a county grant writer, sidelining separate efforts to hire a professional historian for the project.
County Executive Jeff Smith, who was described in McCorquodale’s manuscript as someone who “recognized the value of a comprehensive historical record of Santa Clara County,” confirmed Monday that the project had been scrapped. The book was part of a larger set of grant writing contracts worth nearly $2.5 million that had been awarded to McCorquodale since 2009, even though she had no prior experience in book publishing. Officials claimed McCorquodale was uniquely qualified to be the history project’s author because her grant proposals throughout the years had successfully brought in millions of dollars for the county.
When county supervisors approved the book project in 2018 — aimed at creating “a historical record that demonstrates the role of County government throughout the years” — McCorquodale’s contract increased to half a million dollars. The contract was extended another year, to $510,000 in 2019, because of project delays. McCorquodale has said in previous statements that she couldn’t turn the manuscript in until 2022 because of pandemic-related delays as well as certain records were inaccessible.
