'Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney’s behest,' the letter reads.
A coalition of LGBTQ employees at Pixar shared a letter to Disney executives Wednesday evening containing a stunning revelation: Disney executives allegedly censor “overtly” gay displays of affection in Pixar films., was shared in response to Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s widely criticized memo to staff Monday after the passage of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida and Disney’s part in funding Gov. Ron DeSantis and state legislators who voted for the bill.
In it, staffers wrote about Disney historically erasing the LGBTQ community in its parks — and only backing the LGBTQ community with merchandise that until recently did not include any LGBTQ-specific terms. They also spoke about the company’s political involvement after the Jan. 6 insurrection and, currently, in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, before dropping the bombshell of Disney “corporate reviews” affecting content.
“We at Pixar have personally witnessed beautiful stories, full of diverse characters, come back from Disney corporate reviews shaved down to crumbs of what they once were,” the letter reads. “Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney’s behest, regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar.”
