The price of home heating fuel in Nova Scotia has more than doubled in the last two years. | SaltWire

The Heating Assistance Rebate Program is now open to help low-income Nova Scotians with home heating costs for the 2022-23 heating season. Stock ImageThe price of home heating fuel in Nova Scotia has more than doubled in the last two years.

The non-profit provides a one-time heating assistance delivery to people who are struggling in Pictou County. During the 2021/22 heating season, MacLellan said they assisted 256 people which was up from 160 the year before.Recognizing that a dollar doesn’t go as far as it did in the past, the Fuel Fund has increased the amount they will provide from $400 to $450. The amount is given once per house, per year and can be used for furnace oil, firewood, wood pellets or propane.

Quite often, he said, the same people they help one year, when they get back on their feet become contributors. The income threshold to qualify for the program is $29,000 for single-income households and $44,000 for family-income households.
