A man and woman from Pickering , Ontario , have been charged after allegedly staging a vehicle theft and collecting insurance money. Durham Regional Police Service ( DRPS ) received a report of a stolen vehicle in the Fairport Road and Strouds Lane area of Pickering on August 20, 2024. The investigation revealed that the woman, who was later compensated by her insurance company, had taken the vehicle to a dealership in early August.

The dealership determined the vehicle was inoperable and made several attempts to contact the woman to remove it. However, the vehicle was never retrieved. In November 2024, the vehicle was eventually towed away. On Friday, the man and woman surrendered to a DRPS division and were taken into custody without incident. Maynawatee Shaw, 69, from Pickering, faces charges of Public Mischief (False Report), Fraudulent Concealment, Fraud Over $5000, and Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence. Christopher Shaw, 36, also from Pickering, is facing the same charges. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Brown of Project Attire at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 7827
